NFPA 25 Inspection Checklist: Weekly to Five-Year Sprinkler Requirements

NFPA 25 is the standard for inspecting, testing, and maintaining water-based fire protection systems. It is long and dense, so here is a working checklist organized by how often each task is due.

Weekly or monthly: check control valves are open and sealed or locked, inspect gauges on wet and dry systems, and confirm dry-pipe valve enclosures are heated in cold weather.

Quarterly: test waterflow alarm devices and supervisory switches, inspect the fire department connection, and perform a main drain test where the system is supplied through a backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve.

Annually: full visual inspection of sprinkler heads, piping, fittings, and hangers from the floor; check the spare head cabinet (correct types, quantity, and wrench); trip test dry-pipe valves; and test antifreeze solutions.

Every five years: internal pipe inspection for obstructions and microbiologically influenced corrosion, and replace or calibrate system gauges. Sprinkler heads themselves must be tested or replaced at 50 years (20 years for fast-response heads).

For Houma and the rest of Terrebonne Parish, humidity and coastal air speed up corrosion, which makes the five-year internal inspection especially important. InspectBlaze tracks every interval for your building and delivers the reports the fire marshal expects.
